🇮🇷 Iran has executed two ISIS members convicted of plotting attacks inside the country. It's a reminder that the Islamic Republic and Islamic State are enemies, not allies, despite what casual observers may assume. They belonged to a cell that formed after ISIS lost its territory in Iraq and Syria. Security forces tracked them to a hideout in the Bamo mountains, near Iraq. Iran has been one of the most aggressive state actors in fighting ISIS on the ground, partly out of genuine hostility and partly out of self-interest. A Sunni jihadist insurgency on its own soil would be an existential threat to its Shia government. Tehran is fighting enemies on multiple fronts, and executing people to prove it's still in control.
